Simplot names new president of AgriBusiness unit
Doug Stone seen as ideal fit to ensure unit serves customers’ expanding needs.
J.R. Simplot Co. senior executive Garrett Lofto has named Doug Stone the next president of Simplot AgriBusiness. Lofto left the position to become J.R. Simplot Co. president and CEO, replacing Bill Whitacre, who is retiring. Stone also will serve on the Simplot Leadership Team, representing AgriBusiness across the diverse company.
“Input agriculture is evolving and we have to shape ourselves for a new future,” Lofto said in a release. “Doug’s strategic vision, global perspective and broad industry knowledge in agriculture and technology make him an ideal fit to lead our AgriBusiness Group and ensure we serve our customers’ expanding needs.” Stone joined Simplot in June 2016 as vice president of wholesale agricultural sales. He quickly expanded his responsibilities to include overseeing the company’s industrial, animal nutrition and silica specialty business areas. He has been instrumental in building and carrying out the company’s import sales strategy to meet the diverse needs of customers, according to a Simplot press release.
“I am excited for the opportunity to lead our AgriBusiness division,” Stone said. “At Simplot, we have a passion that surrounds our customers. Through the dedication of our people and commitment of the Simplot family, we are striving to earn their business today and for generations to come.”
Before joining Simplot, Stone was CEO of Consolidated Sourcing Solutions, a retail crop inputs purchasing entity. Earlier, he was senior vice president of Terra Industries. He earned an MBA from the University of South Dakota and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Iowa.
AgriBusiness is one of four primary business groups that comprise J.R. Simplot Co. AgriBusiness operates two phosphate mines in the western U.S., and processes fertilizers and other nutrients that support farms, ranches, landscapes, fire control and city departments around the world. AgriBusiness, paired with retail stores throughout the western U.S. and Canada, has built longstanding relationships with farmers and horticulturists through expertise, technology and sustainable practices, Simplot said.
Simplot is a privately held agribusiness firm based in Boise. It operates an integrated portfolio including phosphate mining, fertilizer manufacturing, farming, ranching and cattle production, food processing and brands, and other agriculture enterprises. Simplot fields operations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia and China, marketing products in more than 40 countries worldwide.
